Himalayan Escapade: From Cooch Behar to the Snow-Kissed Valleys of North Sikkim

 

Every journey has its own rhythm, a song that plays out in landscapes, laughter, winding roads, and quiet awe. Our recent trip from the serene plains of Cooch Behar to the snow-blanketed embrace of North Sikkim was just that—a beautiful melody of mountains, waterfalls, and unforgettable experiences.

Day 1: Cooch Behar to Gangtok – Entering the Himalayan Gateway

We started early from Cooch Behar, chasing the horizon where the flat lands begin to undulate into the mighty Himalayas. The drive was scenic, filled with misty hills and crisp mountain air slowly replacing the warmth of the plains.

As we entered Gangtok, the vibrant capital of Sikkim, we were greeted with fluttering prayer flags, winding roads, and a skyline painted with clouds. The first night was all about rest and soaking in the calm vibe of the hill town.

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen via Cascading Waterfalls

With our spirits high and thermals on, we started for Lachen—a hidden gem nestled in North Sikkim. Along the way, we stopped at Butterfly Waterfall, an ethereal spot where water dances down mossy rocks amidst butterflies flitting around. But that wasn’t the only spectacle. The journey was peppered with numerous other falls—each gushing with life, roaring through the rugged terrain.

By
evening, we reached Lachen, a quaint hamlet tucked away in the hills. As night fell, we were enveloped by the stillness only the mountains can offer—broken only by the occasional crackle of a fire or a distant bark of a mountain dog.

Day 3: A Date with the Clouds – 15,000 Café, Kala Patthar & Gurudongmar Lake

 The next morning, we ascended further into the clouds.   Our first major stop? India’s Highest Café – 15,000   Café.  Nestled at an altitude that leaves you breathless   (both literally and metaphorically), this place offered   steaming cups of tea and stunning panoramas.

 We then moved towards Kala Patthar, where the   landscape turned stark and surreal—black rocks, white   snow, and blue skies blended into a painter’s canvas. It   was raw, untouched beauty.

Our final destination for the day was the iconic Gurudongmar Lake. At over 17,000 feet, this sacred lake shimmered in shades of turquoise, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and whispers of prayer. Words fall short in front of such majesty. Post this soul-stirring experience, we descended to Lachung, where we rested for the night, the silence of the mountains lulling us into deep sleep. On the way to Lachung we enjoyed the mesmerizing beauty of Beumak Falls.

Day 4: Valleys of Wonders – Katao & Yumthang

 If we thought we had seen it all, Katao and Yumthang Valley proved us   wrong. Katao, often called the “Switzerland of Sikkim,” was a winter   wonderland. Snowflakes danced around us as we took in the dramatic

 Later, we headed to the famed Yumthang Valley, also   known as the Valley of Flowers. Though it was winter,   the sheer expanse of the valley, cradled by towering   peaks, had a wild beauty of its own. After a hearty lunch, we began our descent back to Gangtok.

Day 5 & 6: Exploring Gangtok – The Urban Pulse of the Mountains

       

   

The next day was spent in and around Gangtok, exploring its local charms. From the peaceful Enchey Monastery to the bustling MG Marg, Gangtok blends tradition with modernity effortlessly. We strolled through markets, tasted local delicacies, and soaked in the town’s chill, friendly vibe.

This trip wasn’t just about places—it was about the journey. From the waterfalls that sang along the roads to the sacred stillness of Gurudongmar Lake, every stop taught us something about nature’s raw power and silent grace.
